Truly, it is FASCINATING the way a person's mind works while dealing with a retail clerk/salesman/whatever.

I always found that these people, whom one must assume has functioning social skills during the rest of their daily lives due to the fact that they are able to shop with you in lieu of being beaten to death with baseball bats set aflame, and yet seem to function without a scrap of human decency the second their minimum-wage earning helper is incapable of bending to their slightest whim, regardless of how nonsensical it may be.

They will hurl every foul insult they can imagine, go for every low blow one could think of, and tear apart your self-esteem without compunction, all because you aren't allowed to give someone a refund for a candy bar they bought two months ago.

... that they already ate.

The best part is, not a MOMENT after they've just drenched you in such an unprecedented wave of abuse, they ask for some other nicety of you as if they didn't just spend the last twenty minutes diminishing your worth as a human being. I kid you not, after a half-hour rampage against everything from my hair to my apparent aid to the Nazi party during WW2 (I'm 24) a woman once asked if I'd mind helping walk her out to her car.

If you are one of these people (you'll know it's you, if you've ever had to say "I just get frustrated with salespeople" to describe how much of an ass you are), I must ask you: How the hell do you function in society?!

This page made me laugh so much. Maybe that's not the appropriate response, but it's because I've been behind the counter talking to that customer. It's so sad and true that it's funny.

It seems to be a sentiment shared only among those of us who've served on the front lines of the service industry.

I still, to this day, do NOT understand people who treat customer service folks this way.

Strangely, I get a lot of customers who treat me and my coworkers like crap and then leave us saying "I worked in retail, you know." As though they paid their dues and now they have cosmic permission to be shitty to people. Those are the ones I really don't understand.
